In Catholic Social Teaching, the value of community develops the interconnectedness of us all and the importance of working together for the common good. It promotes solidarity, mutual responsibility, and the idea that a good community looks after the well-being and dignity of all.
In Religious Education (RE), the children learn about different faith communities, understanding the values of cooperation and mutual respect, and exploring the idea of serving others. In Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE), the curriculum includes work on community involvement (in units such as 'Our School Environment', 'Democracy' and 'Working Together').
The History curriculum covers diverse communities from different time periods, cultures, and geographical locations. This can include studying how communities have evolved, how they interacted with each other, and the impact of collective actions on historical events. Geography work features the concept of communities, looking at both local and global communities and the important message that we are all connected with a responsibility to care for our world (economies, cultures, and how they are interconnected through trade and migration).
The Citizenship curriculum encourages children to understand their rights and responsibilities as members of various communities, whether local, national, or global. This includes learning about democracy, justice, equality, and participation in community decision-making processes.

SJV Reception Community 2024! |
The SJV choir are a hard-working, 'touring' troupe who take great pleasure in representing the school at prestigious events. This week, they took part in the Haringey Singing Festival, joining the schools from across the borough to create some lovely music and great memories together!
The SJV Community was again represented in style this weekend when we took part in the world-famous London Marathon! A huge team of teacher, parents and (of course) children made the trip up to London's West End to run the last part of this iconic course, passing Buckingham Palace and Horse Guards' Parade along the way. What a wonderful group of people, doing a wonderful thing together!
The whole SJV community came together to celebrate the wonderful diversity of our community. Costume, performance, food, song and dance made for a colourful and heart-warming day! All organised by our year 6s, who wanted to show how together we are!
Celebrating the transition from Primary to Secondary along with the whole community of Haringey Voluntary Aided schools.
The Choir was magnificent at the community carol concert just before Christmas.
Making their school and parents proud as they perform at the Alexandra Palace carol event. | The SJV Choir supports the Westminster Cathedral outreach programme. |
The parent community at St. John Vianney is incredibly strong! With the thriving 'Friends of SJV' at the helm, they attend celebration assemblies, liturgies and fundraising events.
The children and parents of SJV are a real asset to their local community. We collectively have improved aspects of our adjoining park with art installations and decorated flower planters, as well as campaigning for anti-social behaviour to be dealt with AND re-designing the public playground next to the school!
